How it works

x402 Facilitator (Overview)

In the x402 protocol, a facilitator is a trusted third-party service that simplifies blockchain-based payments for web applications and APIs. Rather than requiring each resource server to handle wallets, gas, and on-chain transactions directly, the facilitator manages those operations securely on their behalf.

When a client initiates a payment (for example, to access an API or digital resource), the facilitator:

  1. Receives and verifies the client’s signed payment payload.
  2. Executes the transaction on-chain, ensuring settlement according to the x402 payment terms.
  3. Notifies the resource server once the payment is confirmed, allowing the server to deliver the paid resource instantly.

By using a facilitator, servers can integrate on-chain payments with minimal infrastructure, while clients benefit from reliable and standardized verification of payments. Facilitators are a key interoperability layer in the x402 ecosystem, bridging traditional web services and blockchain settlement.
